Tools and Resources

The literature (see useful publications tab, and Poll’s bibliography of impact and outcome literature) contains a multitude of useful resources and studies written on value and impact. Weightman et al. (2009) provide suggestions for a practical, but “low-bias” impact study for health libraries and basic principles of questionnaire and interview surveys. The SCONUL Impact Initiative proposes stages in assessing the impact of higher education libraries, from choosing an intervention and relevant indicators to presenting results (Payne 2006).

Other resources include output from library collaborations that have developed toolkits with templates for surveys, case studies and advice for developing impact indicators (LIHNN; NHS; Evidence Base research and evaluation services). And some authors have published their survey or interview instruments (Bawden 2009; Dalton 2012; Information Technology Primary Care Research Group 2009).

Knowledge for Healthcare (NHS Library and Knowledge Services )
In 2016, Knowledge for Healthcare librarians in England updated their impact toolkit. This includes an updated survey which may be used in various healthcare settings.
Older versions may be found at Assessing the impact of health libraries: a practical online toolkit.
The intention of the toolkit is that it should be adapted by librarians to meet their particular needs and the circumstances of their Trust. While there is an element of quantitative data collection, the toolkit also allows library users to ‘tell a story’ and provide telling narrative demonstrating the added value of library information services and their impact upon staff development, upon individual cases and current practice, leading to improved patient care.
